Fan Zhendong has won the Men’s Singles title at the 2017 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals hosted in Astana, Kazakhstan following a straight games victory over Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the final.

Determined to avenge the defeat he suffered to the German competitor in their previous encounter at the 2017 German Open, Fan Zhendong established a positive tempo right from the start of the title match in Astana and ultimately proved too strong for Dimitrij Ovtcharov on this occasion (11-7, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10).

“I’m very happy with my victory, having played well in the final against Ovtcharov. I lost the last time we played at the German Open, so I’m really happy to win against him this time round. The first few games were tight but I was bold at the crucial moment.” – Fan Zhendong.

Success in Astana marks Fan Zhendong’s first Men’s Singles gold medal at an ITTF World Tour Grand Finals, becoming the eighth Chinese representative to achieve the feat.

On the other hand it was disappointment for Dimitrij Ovtcharov, but the German will return home happy with his effort at the tournament and in the knowledge that he will be named World No.1 as of 1st January 2018.
