With the release of the new ITTF World Rankings format, January’s tables have plenty of interesting talking points to dissect.

First comes the news that Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov takes over the World No.1 spot from Ma Long, who held the position for 34 consecutive months. Fan Zhendong remains in second position despite his success at the 2017 World Tour Grand Finals while Timo Boll rises to third.

Ma Long slips six positions, falling from first to seventh while Zhang Jike slides down to 54th. Egypt’s Omar Assar reaches a personal best rank while Japanese star Tomokazu Harimoto moves to 11th.

Chen Meng leads the women’s world rankings table ahead of fellow compatriot Zhu Yuling and Singapore’s Feng Tianwei. Chinese Taipei’s Chen Szu-Yu gains 10 positions to move into 16th spot and Hana Matelova also deserves a mention with the Czech competitor rising from 107th to 47th in the list.

January’s table also see shock disappointments for China’s Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen who have both fallen out of the top 20 positions.
