Ding Ning has missed out on winning the Women’s Singles title for a third consecutive year at the China Open following a narrow seven games defeat to fellow Chinese star Wang Manyu in the 2018 final.

Champion in 2016 and 2017, Ding Ning entered the 2018 final with plenty of optimism and was searching for her 14th Women’s Singles gold medal on the ITTF World Tour.

However, it was her younger national teammate Wang Manyu who stole the show in Shenzhen, claiming her third ITTF World Tour Women’s Singles trophy of the year having also prevailed at the 2018 Hungarian Open and 2018 Hong Kong Open.

Despite trailing by the conclusion of the opening game, Ding Ning recovered well with back-to-back game wins to move into a 1-2 lead but Wang Manyu wasn’t at all fazed as she pulled two ends back herself to put the scoreboard in her favour by a 3-2 score-line.

Responding with a victory in game six but Ding Ning would ultimately miss out on the top step of the podium with Wang Manyu emerging successful in the deciding game to lift the trophy (13-11, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5).
