It was an all Chinese final in the Men’s Singles category at the 2019 ITTF German Open, with the top two highest ranked players in the world, Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong, facing off against each other for the crown in Bremen.

Fan Zhendong was in good shape for the final, beating two fellow Chinese teammates, Wang Chuqin and Liang Jingkun, in the follow up to the last stage against the infamous “Cloud Walker”.

Ranked top of the men’s world rankings table but Xu Xin wasn’t quite strong enough to defeat his opponent on this occasion, with a comfortable 4-1 victory for Fan Zhendong (5-11, 11-8, 14-12, 11-7, 11-7).

In the Women’s singles, it was Team China versus Team Japan, with the teenage superstar from Japan Mima Ito finding herself against the formidable Sun Yingsha (currently one place in the women’s world rankings ahead of Ito).

Sun only dropped three games on her way to the final, defeating three Chinese teammates in the earlier stages of the tournament. Mima Ito was only able to steal one game from the Chinese finalist (11-3, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-4), adding Sun Yingsha’s victory in the Women’s Singles to China’s tally.
