In Sapporo it was Team China that stood above the rest in the race for singles glory as Sun Yingsha and Xu Xin secured gold medal finishes at the 2019 ITTF Japan Open on 16th June.

Required to compete in qualification action 18-year-old Sun Yingsha successfully fought her way through the main draw with victories over Suh Hyowon (KOR), Kasumi Ishikawa (JPN), Wang Manyu (CHN) and Chen Meng (CHN) to book her spot in the Women’s Singles final.

Awaiting the teenage ace at the final hurdle was World Champion Liu Shiwen, a tough opponent to face in the last push for silverware.

However, against expectations Sun Yingsha came out on top across seven games (11-4, 11-9, 4-11, 6-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-3) to lift her second Women’s Singles trophy on the ITTF World Tour with her previous one coming two years back at the 2017 Japan Open in Tokyo.

Over in the Men’s Singles draw Xu Xin, seeded third, saw off top seed Fan Zhendong in an exciting semi-final clash to move to withing one win from the title.

Taking on surprise finalist Lin Yun-Ju (TPE), Xu Xin needed just five games to beat the 17-year-old to the top step of the podium (11-9, 14-12, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8).

Winner in the Mixed Doubles and Men’s Doubles events, adding the Men’s Singles gold to his collection means that Xu Xin becomes only the second player in the history of the ITTF World Tour to claim the triple crown with Jang Woojin (KOR) achieving the feat at the 2018 ITTF Korea Open.
