Indian table tennis fans can rejoice after Sathiyan Gnanasekaran won his first Men’s Singles title at an ITTF Challenge Series event with a six games win against Kazuhiro Yoshimura at the 2017 Spanish Open.

The final turned out to be a highly entertaining match for the crowd in Almeria as the Indian and Japanese competitors met head-to-head aiming to lift an ITTF Challenge Series Men’s Singles trophy for the first time.

Demonstrating a masterclass of control Sathiyan Gnanasekaran stood up to the challenge of the quick-paced attacking talent of Kazuhiro Yoshimura with the No.9 seed emerging successful over the 11th seeded player across six ends (11-7, 3-11, 11-6, 6-11, 13-11, 11-7).

Last year Sathiyan Gnanasekaran stunned table tennis fans across the globe when he became only the second player from India to win an ITTF World Tour Men’s Singles gold medal with his positive outing at the 2016 Belgium Open.

Now the 24-year-old becomes only the second Indian to win a Men’s Singles title at an ITTF Challenge Series tournament following in the footsteps of fellow countryman Soumyajit Ghosh, who reached the top step of the podium at the 2017 Chile Open in April.
