The world table tennis community was left in shock on Sunday 17th September after Romania stunned defending champions Germany to claim the Women’s Championship Division gold medal for the first time in 12 years.

Elizabeta Samara is currently the lead player for the team and established herself as one of the top competitors on the continent in 2015 when she defied the odds to become European Women’s Singles champion.

Then there’s Daniela Monteiro Dodean who proved vital to Romania’s title winning campaign at this year’s continental Championships with surprise victories against Portugal’s Yu Fu and Germany’s Han Ying, while Bernadette Szocs continues to show great progress in her game.

However, arguably the most exciting part of Romania’s future prospects lie with the country’s youth development which has produced talented stars such as Adina Diaconu, Andreea Dragoman and Tania Plaian.

Will Romania go on to become the dominant force in Europe? Or will another country achieve that feat instead?
