European champions Romania have successfully booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Championship Division at the 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships following a strong conclusion to their group stage campaign in Halmstad.

Experiencing defeat on the opening day of play against the Netherlands, the Romanian team had been left in a spot of bother and with arguably the two toughest teams in Group C still to come in the final two rounds of group fixtures all eyes were firmly focused on the sixth seeds on Tuesday 1st May.

Elizabeta Samara was surely the star of the day, earning a massive upset against Cheng I-Ching (4-11, 15-17, 11-7, 11-8, 11-4) before victories from Bernadette Szocs and Daniela Monteiro Dodean over Chen Szu-Yu (7-11, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8) and Liu Hsing-Yin (12-10, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8) handed Romania an unexpected 3-0 win against the third seeded nation.

Then in the final group stage fixture a brace from Elizabeta Samara against Cha Hyo Sim (11-13, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 14-12) and Kim Song I (11-3, 10-12, 15-13, 13-11) proved vital as Romania stormed to a 3-1 triumph over DPR Korea to finish at the summit of the group.

“We were so angry after the defeat against Netherlands. We came here as European champions with only one motive on our mind: to reach quarter-final and to play for medal. Netherlands was one of the adversaries that we knew we had to beat in order to achieve our goal.” – Elizabeta Samara.
