Suffering defeat at the final hurdle last year but at the 2018 Swedish Open in Stockholm Fan Zhendong took the gold medal in the Men’s Singles event.

Relatively untroubled throughout the competition, World No.1 Fan Zhendong needed just four games to see off surprise semi-finalist Mattias Falck while 2017 champion Xu Xin brought qualifier Zhou Qihao’s impressive run to an end in the lower half of the semi-finals draw.

In the final, Fan Zhendong struck first with a solid outing in game one and soon found himself 3-0 ahead as Xu Xin failed to win a single of his four game point opportunities in games two and three.

Xu Xin responded in the fourth end to narrow the deficit to 3-1 but there was to be no comeback from the pen-hold specialist as Fan Zhendong won game five by a two-point margin to seal the title (11-7, 14-12, 13-11, 9-11, 11-9).

“I didn’t realise I have won three times; for sure I am very excited to have won again. Thanks a lot to everyone who supported me. I am very happy to play here once again in Sweden. I think I can win more than three times; whatever I will try my best.” Fan Zhendong

Fan Zhendong has now won the Men’s Singles gold medal at the Swedish Open on three occasions [2014, 2015 and 2018].
