Liu Shiwen has won the Women’s Singles title at the Qatar Open for the third time following an impressive outing at the 2018 edition of the event.

Unseeded for the tournament Liu Shiwen was forced to negotiate two days of qualification action in Doha along with World and Olympic champion Ding Ning, but unsurprisingly both players managed to successfully reach the main event with little trouble.

Proving too strong for the opposition, Liu Shiwen secured four consecutive victories in the main draw to book her spot in the title match where fellow countrywoman Wang Manyu awaited.

Runner up at last year’s competition Wang Manyu moved closer to a gold medal finish this time out after taking a commanding 0-2 lead in the tie but Liu Shiwen had other ideas, producing a superb comeback effort to win by a 4-2 scoreline (8-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5, 11-6).

“I have played seven matches in order to win this tournament; I am very happy to win here. I must express my gratitude to Qatar; this is a magnificent venue. I’ll be back next year.” – Liu Shiwen
