Fan Zhendong has won his first Men’s Singles title in Doha following a top performance from the Chinese star at the 2018 Qatar Open.

In 2016 and 2017 there was heartbreak at the final hurdle for Fan Zhendong in Doha, but this time around the title was his.

Opposing Fan Zhendong in the 2018 final was Brazil’s Hugo Calderano who stunned Timo Boll, Tomokazu Harimoto and Lin Gaoyuan on his way to the gold medal contest and gave more than a good account of himself in the final.

However, there was to be no dream finale for the Brazilian as top seed Fan Zhendong prevailed by a 4-0 scoreline (13-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-7) to claim the title.

“Hugo has a very strong backhand, I had to change the placement of the ball a great deal. In the first two games I was too cautious, too passive; after winning the second game I played in a more positive manner.” – Fan Zhendong
