Mima Ito Stuns World No.1 To Win 2018 Swedish Open

Japan’s Mima Ito, 18, has defied expectations to lift the Women’s Singles trophy at the 2018 Swedish Open in Stockholm.

Seeded seventh for the competition, Mima Ito pulled off miraculous comeback victories against the likes of Feng Tianwei, Liu Shiwen and current World champion Ding Ning on her way to the final.

An impressive run from the Japanese teenager and in the final she encountered another major challenge as she met face-to-face with top seed and World No.1 Zhu Yuling, who entered the match as favourite for the win.

However, despite the odds being against her Mima Ito stunned spectators in Stockholm with a thunderous 4-0 display against Zhu Yuling to claim the title (11-3, 11-3, 11-5, 11-8).

“I was very focused, played one point at a time; suddenly I won the match, it’s incredible! In Halmstad at the World Championships I won against China. Today I did it again; that’s the best for me that I could do it again.” Mima Ito

Mima Ito has now won six Women’s Singles gold medals on the ITTF World Tour.
