May: Patrick Franziska

This month SD Sport takes a closer look at Germany’s Patrick Franziska who performed brilliantly at the 2015 World Championships in China making it to the quarter-final stage in men’s singles event.

Franziska was born in Bensheim (Germany) in 1992 and began his table tennis career with TSV 1875 Peak. In 2009, he was part of the German youth team who claimed 2nd place at the Youth World Cup in Columbia , and a year later (aged 18) he was crowned European Junior Singles Champion in Turkey. In the 2009-2010 season, Franziska moved to Bundesliga club TG Hanau and won the Rookie of the Year title for the year 2010.

The German player then joined TTC Rhonsprudel Fulda-Maberzell for the 2012-2013 season following the withdrawal of his old club TG Hanau from the Bundesliga. Franziska currently plays for Borussia Dusseldorf having signed for them at the beginning of the 2014-2015 campaign.

At the 2015 World Championships Patrick Franziska wasn’t expected to reach the latter stages of the tournament, however, he performed exceptionally well considering his ITTF ranking for April (no.56). He made it to the quarter-finals where he lost out to eventual runner-up Fang Bo of China 4-1, but impressive wins over Steffen Mengel and Marcos Freitas have helped Franziska climb over 25 places up the World Rankings to 28th.
