World and Olympic champion Ma Long has sent a message to the rest of the world’s elite players with his title win at the 2018 German Open in Bremen.

Not seen on the ITTF World Tour since the 2017 Japan Open held last June, Ma Long lost his spot at the top of the Men’s World Rankings table in January 2018 following a major restructure of the rankings format.

However, the Chinese star demonstrated that he still has what it takes to succeed on the world stage, beating Timo Boll and Wong Chun Ting in the lead up to the German Open Men’s Singles final.

In the gold medal match itself, Ma Long got the better of fellow compatriot Xu Xin across five games (11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6) to win a record fifth Men’s Singles title at the German Open.

“I think Germany is a lucky country for me, and Bremen a lucky city. I’m happy to be back and thank you everyone for supporting me here.” – Ma Long

Three stops into the 2018 ITTF World Tour season and all three Men’s Singles titles have gone to China with Fan Zhendong winning in Hungary and Qatar prior to Ma Long’s success in Germany. Will the run continue when the ITTF World Tour visits Hong Kong in May?
