Known by avid table tennis fans all over the world as ‘The Dragon’, Chinese superstar Ma Long realised his wish for revenge at the 2020 ITTF Finals held in Zhengzhou, China, with victory over fellow countryman and current World No.1 Fan Zhendong in a thrilling five-game final (13-11, 11-7, 12-10, 9-11, 11-8).

Seeing the 2020 ITTF Men’s World Cup title taken from his clutches the week prior after losing out to Fan Zhendong from a winning position, Ma Long was looking to turn the tide of fate in his hands in Zhengzhou.

Aided by the added fire and determination spurring him on, Ma, 32, produced a magnificent display of skill against Fan at the final hurdle, claiming the ITTF Finals title with an emphatic 4-1 victory over his Chinese national teammate.

This now marks Ma Long’s sixth ITTF Finals title, which is yet another reminder to fans just how dominant he remains in the sport to this very day.

‘I am very happy after winning such a tough battle. Each and every point was difficult to win and I believe that Fan Zhendong could feel it too. At the end it was just a great relief for me.’ – Ma Long

Having been named the third seed in the tournament, Ma was certainly up against the odds in his quest to be crowned champion in Zhengzhou. With this in mind, Ma had to make sure he was at his absolute best to challenge his friend and rival for the title.

‘In terms of overall ability on the table, Fan is second to none at this current point in time. Since last year we have played each other in several finals, including at the Men’s World Cup last week, and he had the upper hand. In today’s match I really wanted to challenge him and thankfully I managed to win.’ – Ma Long
