The Men’s and Women’s Singles gold medals on offer at the 2019 ITTF World Tour Platinum Qatar Open have gone to players representing China with Ma Long and Wang Manyu picking up the respective titles in Doha.

Making his first international appearance since August 2018 Ma Long entered the 2019 Qatar Open further down the seeding list than on previous occasions, occupying the No.11 position in the Men’s Singles draw.

However, that didn’t hold him back in Doha, beating Tristan Flore, Timo Boll, Jun Mizutani and Xu Xin on his way to the final. His opponent at the final hurdle, second seed Lin Gaoyuan accounted for Tomislav Pucar, Jang Woojin, Lin Yun-Ju and Mattias Falck at the foot of the draw.

In the gold medal match itself Lin Gaoyuan held the upper hand in the early stages of the action, emerging victorious in the opening two games to establish a commanding lead. But, Ma Long made the perfect response, claiming the next four games in a row to seal a 4-2 win (9-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9).

Ma Long has now won a whopping 27 Men’s Singles trophies on the ITTF World Tour, equalling the record set by Belarusian legend Vladimir Samsonov.

Over in the Women’s Singles event Wang Manyu and Liu Shiwen both produced enough in their opening four fixtures to set up another head-to-head meeting in the final.

For 2018 champion Liu Shiwen 4-0 victories over Matilda Ekholm, Gu Yuting and Wang Yidi resulted in a semi-finals spot where she just about held the edge against Sun Yingsha, beating the qualifier 4-3. As for Wang Manyu she beat Margaryta Pestoska, Chen Xingtong and Feng Tianwei on her way to the penultimate round before inflicting a powerful 4-0 defeat upon top seed Ding Ning.

In a repeat of last year’s final Liu Shiwen and Wang Manyu once again battled it out for the top step of the podium but this time it was the latter player who came away the happier, claiming a 4-2 win (11-3, 10-12, 12-10, 11-6, 5-11, 11-5) to lift the trophy.

This marks Wang Manyu’s fifth Women’s Singles success on the ITTF World Tour at just 20 years of age!
