At the 2019 ITTF China Open the Men’s and Women’s Singles titles were awarded to two Chinese stars with Ma Long and Chen Meng emerging victorious in Shenzhen.

Seeded 11th for the event, three-time World Champion Ma Long was bidding for a record breaking 28th Men’s Singles trophy on the ITTF World Tour, looking to surpass Vladimir Samsonov’s long-time record.

Advancing to the final hurdle Ma Long met fellow countryman Lin Gaoyuan, a big name rival who was aiming to lift the trophy in front of the home crowd for the first time.

However, as the match unfolded it was clear that there was only one winner as Ma Long defeated the second seed in straight games (12-10, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4), making history in the process.

Over in the Women’s Singles draw Chen Meng put her recent World Championship silver medal disappointment behind her with a title-winning display in Shenzhen.

In the gold medal match Chen Meng met 2018 China Open winner Wang Manyu, beating the No.4 seed across five games (11-3, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7) to secure the top step of the podium.

“Shenzhen is my lucky place. Last time I won the Marvellous 12 and qualified for World Championships. Wang Manyu and me, we are too familiar with each other. We train together every day. We play against each other several times a year. Today is all about how we play on court. My coach Ma Lin encouraged me a lot.” – Chen Meng
