History was made at the 2019 ITTF Women’s World Cup in Chengdu as Liu Shiwen lifted the cup for a record fifth time!

Liu Shiwen and Zhu Yuling both made their country proud with an all Chinese-final at the World Cup, held in none other than their home nation.

Both players were on fire defeating their opponents convincingly en route to the final, dropping only three games all together.

However, despite there being undeniable success for Team China, there could only be one champion. It was Liu Shiwen who added yet another title to the Team China’s trophy cabinet, with a 4-2 win over Zhu Yuling.

Yet it was no easy feat for Liu Shiwen, with Zhu Yuling taking the first game 11-4, applying pressure to the eventual champion. Sadly for Zhu Yuling, she was only able to claim another game before defeat, ending the 2019 ITTF Women’s World Cup with Liu Shiwen as victor (11-6, 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 15-13).

“I was much younger the last four times that I won the World Cup. This World Cup is the last one before Tokyo 2020, so this title is very special to me. Today’s match was really tough and close. I am very happy that I did not give up and still tried my best even when I met some difficulties during the match.” – Liu Shiwen

With China claiming positions 1 and 2, third position was still left untouched. However, there were no Chinese players in the running; it was Singapore’s Feng Tianwei and USA’s Lily Zhang who met in a head-to-head contest. In an exciting affair it was Feng Tianwei who took bronze, beating the surprise package of the tournament Lily Zhang 4-1 (11-6, 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 15-13).

“I am very satisfied with my performance here. Actually my goal was to reach the top eight, but now I have brought home the bronze medal. I am very happy. This is my first time playing against Lily. Today she posed a big threat. She is an outstanding player. I know she is a top student as well. It is not easy for her to achieve this high level.” – Feng Tianwei

Defeat for Lily Zhang but she leaves Chengdu with a smile on her face having become the first player from the United States of America to reach the last four of the Women’s World Cup following victories over Adriana Diaz, Miu Hirano and Sofia Polcanova.
