Competing at the first-ever ITTF Challenge Plus event, Hina Hayata and Liang Jingkun have won the respective Women’s and Men’s Singles titles at the 2019 Portugal Open in Lisbon.

Showing her quality from start to finish, Hina Hayata enjoyed a fine run of success on her way to the Women’s Singles final including a fantastic victory over top seed Liu Shiwen in the Round of 16.

Her opponent at the final hurdle was none other than fellow Japanese teammate Honoka Hashimoto, a defensive minded player who put up a brave fight but ultimately fell just short against 11th seed Hina Hayata (9-11, 8-11, 11-4, 12-10, 11-3, 8-11, 11-8).

Over in the Men’s Singles side of the tournament Liang Jingkun was the standout player with his title win, however, he very nearly missed out on that honour.

In the semi-finals Liang Jingkun fought back from 1-5 down to claim a nail biting 11-9 win in the deciding seventh game to see off qualifier Liu Yebo in a thrilling affair and things continued to get better from there on out for the third seed.

Despite falling behind early in the tie Liang Jingkun responded well with four consecutive game wins to post a 4-1 win over top seed Lin Gaoyuan (6-11, 12-10, 14-12, 11-7, 11-6).
