The 2019 ITTF Hong Kong Open has been won by China’s Lin Gaoyuan and Wang Yidi following an exciting conclusion to the action at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium on 9th June

Emerging victorious in the Men’s Doubles contest earlier in the day, Lin Gaoyuan went on to add the Men’s Singles gold medal to his name.

Seeded first for the competition, Lin Gaoyuan accounted for Japanese second seed Tomokazu Harimoto across six games (11-8, 7-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7) to reverse the outcome from the 2018 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals.

“For sure I am happy to win, this was a very tough match but I am well prepared. Playing in Hong Kong does feel like half a home court to me, it certainly helped with those fans rooting for me during the match. Despite winning the title, I still have a lot of shortcomings that I would like to improve on and play even better in the upcoming tournaments.” – Lin Gaoyuan

However, it was the Women’s Singles event that took the spotlight with unseeded qualifier Wang Yidi defying the odds to lift the trophy.

Winner of the Under 21 Women’s Singles title last year, one year on Wang Yidi reached the top step of the senior podium beating second seed Mima Ito in straight games (11-3, 11-7, 11-5, 11-6) to claim her first senior gold on the international stage.
