Against all the odds, China’s Liang Jingkun has won his first Men’s Singles gold medal on the ITTF World Tour following a fantastic display at the 2018 Austrian Open in Linz.

Unseeded for the competition, Liang Jingkun was forced to begin his campaign in the qualification rounds before picking up superb victories over Wong Chun Ting, Lin Yun-Ju, Hugo Calderano and a hugely impressive victory over World No.1 Fan Zhendong to reach the final against expectations.

In the final itself Liang Jingkun met the master of pen-hold Xu Xin, a player who was chasing his 15th title in the category.

However, despite being the overwhelming underdog Liang Jingkun pulled off another terrific performance to beat the second seed in a seven game thriller (11-5, 4-11, 11-6, 9-11, 13-11, 11-13, 11-2).

“I am very satisfied with my performance. It is my first victory on the ITTF World Tour and a great reward for all the work. Every player in Chinese national team is capable of winning such a tournament. I am glad that I could come out as the champion. Linz will have a special place in my heart; I must thank the crowd for the great support.” Liang Jingkun
