Li Qian has been crowned Women’s Singles Champion on the continental scene, becoming the first female player from Poland to achieve the feat following a superb outing at the 2018 European Table Tennis Championships.

In the final Li Qian met a surprise opponent in the form of Ukrainian qualifier Margaryta Pesotska, who pulled off an impressive victory over top seed Sofia Polcanova in the penultimate round.

Against expectations Margaryta Pesotska enjoyed the early stages of the final more than her fifth seeded opponent from Poland, claiming the opening two games of the match to gain the upper hand.

However, four game wins on the trot in the other direction saw Li Qian recover to claim the gold medal in Alicante, Spain (11-8, 12-10, 6-11, 6-11, 2-11, 2-11).

“It was difficult because no one plays like Pesotska. I beat her at the Olympic Qualifications in Sweden and that was a close match as well. I was under pressure because we had to play under expedite rule but now I am so happy. At the start I could not find my game. Finally, everything came together.” – Li Qian
