Team China were the favourites for silverware at the 2019 ITTF Austrian Open held in Linz, with many of the country’s leading names present in both the Men’s and Women’s Singles events,

Yet there was only to be half of the expected success for China, with an all-Chinese Men Singles final between Fan Zhendong and qualifier Zhao Zihao guaranteeing gold for the nation.

It was the current World No.1 Fan Zhendong who took the title in Linz, producing a comfortable 4-0 victory over his fellow countryman.

“After winning the title at the German Open, now I’ve won the Austrian Open. This will boost my self esteem for further challenges to come. I knew my opponent very well, as we practice together in the Chinese national team. In my opinion winning the first game was crucial, cause I got the confidence which I needed to succeed.” – Fan Zhendong

In the Women’s Singles draw it was Mima Ito that stole the show with the Japanese teenager superstar dropping just two games on her way to the final where China’s very own Zhu Yuling awaited.

Against the odds, Ito stole China’s dreams of a “perfect run”, toppling Zhu 4-1 to lift the Women’s Singles trophy in Linz.

“I tried to come into the rallies and win point by point. Thank you very much to all Japanese fans and also the fantastic Austrian crowd who are always cheering for me. DANKESCHÖN!” – Mima Ito

With Japan and China’s mixed success at the 2019 ITTF Austrian Open, Fan Zhendong and Mima Ito will have their eyes set on even more glory at next month’s 2019 ITTF World Grand Tour Finals held in Zhengzhou.
