Fan Zhendong has won his first Men’s Singles gold medal on the ITTF World Tour since 2016 following a powerful outing at the 2018 Hungarian Open in Budapest.

The top seed for the tournament Fan Zhendong took on fellow Chinese competitor Wang Chuqin, who was making his first ever appearance in an ITTF World Tour final.

Wang Chuqin enjoyed a wonderful run leading up to the title match, beginning his campaign in the qualifying rounds before claiming shock victories over the likes of Chuang Chih-Yuan and Chen Chien-An in the main draw.

However, despite a brave effort in the final Wang Chuqin couldn’t quite achieve the dream finish that he desired as Fan Zhendong came out on top across five ends (6-11, 11-9, 7-11, 12-14, 3-11).

“I was expecting a very hard match at a high level, both of us played very well. I managed to win the important fourth game and I took the momentum from it. It’s a very good start to the year and a nice way to celebrate my birthday.” – Fan Zhendong.

Fan Zhendong has now won nine Men’s Singles trophies on the ITTF World Tour in what has been 14 finals for the current World No.2 player.
