The German Men’s Team were on fire at the Liebherr 2019 ITTF European Table Tennis Championships, taking victory in Nantes, France without even dropping a single match!

Germany met Portugal in the final where Dimitrij Ovtcharov looked seemingly unstoppable against his opponent Marcos Freitas in the opener, winning 3-0 with a solid performance against the Portuguese star (11-7, 11-7, 11-8).

Table tennis legend Timo Boll was to follow his teammate, making his way onto the scorecard with a 3-1 win against Joao Monteiro (11-7, 4-11, 11-9, 11-7). But it was Patrick Franziska who secured the crown for Germany, defeating Tiago Apolonia 3-0 in an albeit tight match (12-10, 11-9, 11-4).

Romania were staggeringly strong in the women’s team category, dropping just one game before reaching the final against Portugal. However, Portugal – like in the men’s final – were out of luck, succumbing to a 3-0 defeat.

It was no easy feat for the Romanians with their opening singles matches both ending in five games. Bernadette Szocs gave Romania the lead with a narrow victory over Portuguese opponent Shao Jieni (11-7, 8-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6) before Daniela Monteiro Dodean doubled their advantage, beating Fu Yu (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 11-3).

Elizabeta Samara brought Portugal’s hopes to an end, handing Romania a gold medal finish with a 3-0 win against Leila Oliveira (11-9, 11-7, 11-6).
