2017 runner-up Fan Zhendong has been eliminated from the Men’s Singles competition at the 2019 World Table Tennis Championships.

Untroubled in the opening three rounds of the event, however, at the fourth hurdle the top seed would meet his match.

Facing a familiar name in Liang Jingkun it was a fixture that only a couple of months back saw Fan Zhendong get the better of his opponent at the Marvellous 12 competition, but this time around it was the opposite outcome.

Establishing an early lead but Fan Zhendong’s fortunes would soon change as Liang Jingkun made the perfect response, winning four of the following five games to stun the World No.1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7).

The Round of 16 also saw Tomokazu Harimoto’s departure with the Japanese teenage star suffering a shock defeat at the hands of Korean qualifier An Jaehyun (11-7, 3-11, 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9) while Sweden’s Mattias Falck claimed a major scalp, sending Lee Sangsu home (11-13, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6).

Timo Boll will also play no further part in the draw after withdrawing due to illness.
