Timo Boll has reinforced his status of one of the European continent’s finest table tennis stars after successfullly capturing his seventh Men’s Singles title at the 2018 European Table Tennis Championships in Alicante, Spain.

Named as the top seeded player for the draw, Timo Boll was an unsurprising fixture in the final but perhaps his opponent in the gold medal match was.

Romania’s Ovidiu Ionescu, the no.28 seed, accounted for the likes of Vladimir Samsonov and Kristian Karlsson on his way to the final but his sensational campaign was brought to a close at the final hurdle.

With the opening game of the final going to Ovidiu Ionescu, Germany’s Timo Boll hit back by registering four game wins in a row to reach the top step of the podium once again (6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5).

“I still have nerves. I still have the desire to win and to play; that is good thing. I enjoy the game. Success is important but if you do not feel the joy, then is time to quit. I think I will stay for a while longer. I am feeling good. I am surprised that I won this Championship. I was shocked in the final. Ionescu is very clever player. He came well prepared, he is fast and he hits hard the ball. Also, the level of his self-confidence was fantastic.” – Timo Boll
