Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has set himself a new goal after ending 2017 on a very positive note with his successful outing at the recent 2017 Spanish Open.

The Indian star came out on top against Kazuhiro Yoshimura in the final, defeating the Japanese competitor by a 4-2 scoreline to earn his first Men’s Singles title at an ITTF Challenge Series event.

Following his strong campaign Almeria, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has jumped up 20 places in December’s men’s world rankings table to reach a personal best ranking of 68th and is only trailing Indian No.1 Sharath Kamal Achanta by six positions.

More joy for Gnanasekaran has come on the doubles scene, winning two ITTF World Tour medals and two ITTF Challenge Series medals this year with the highlight surely being a silver medal finish with partner Soumyajit Ghosh at the 2017 Bulgaria Open.

Upon reflection Gnanasekaran believes that 2017 has been the standout year in his career to date and is confident that he can continue to rise up the world rankings ladder.

“It’s been the best year for me. I worked on more specifics with my coach S. Raman and the results have shown. I am playing more tournaments abroad and it has helped. A special thanks to India coach Massimo Costantini who has been giving valuable inputs. My goal of reaching the top 20 looks definitely possible.” – Sathiyan Gnanasekaran.
