There was a dramatic conclusion to the Women’s Singles event at the 2017 Swedish Open as the unseeded qualifier Chen Xingtong claimed a stunning victory over top seed Ding Ning in Stockholm.

World and Olympic champion Ding Ning was aiming to win the Women’s Singles title at the Swedish Open for the first time in her career and was the firm favourite to emerge from the final with the trophy in her hands.

However, Chen Xingtong was not to be underestimated having earned impressive results against Chen Meng and Zhu Yuling on her way to the title match.

The 20-year-old star played a highly aggressive game in the final and came away from the seven game thriller as the deserved champion (11-9, 15-13, 10-12, 11-6, 6-11, 11-6, 11-9).

“I’m so happy to have won; I was losing in the seventh game but I kept fighting. You must never give up. Ding Ning made many changes when serving which caused some difficulties; I think my forehand top spin down the parallel was key feature.” – Chen Xingtong.

Victory in Stockholm marks Chen Xingtong’s second Women’s Singles success of the year having achieved a first position finish at the 2017 Hungarian Open in January.
