Lin Gaoyuan has won silverware on his Asian Cup debut, defeating World No.2 Fan Zhendong to lift the Men’s Singles trophy at the 2017 event.

Runner up on his two previous appearances at the tournament, Fan Zhendong was attempting to go one better in the Indian city of Ahmedabad.

However, the wait for the gold medal goes on for Fan Zhendong after the 20-year-old Chinese competitor failed to prevent his fellow countryman Lin Gaoyuan from reaching the top step of the podium.

Following the conclusion of the opening four games the match remained all-square at 2-2, but a strong performance from Lin Gaoyuan in games five and six proved enough to secure the title for the player making his first showing at the competition (11-7, 7-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5).

Success in India means that Lin Gaoyuan has reserved his spot at the upcoming 2017 Men’s World Cup set to take place in October.

“I’m very excited now that I’m qualified to play in the World Cup”, stated Lin Gaoyuan after the final. “Before playing in the tournament, I didn’t even think about playing at the World Cup, and my goal was just to play each and every match well.”
