The ETTU (European Table Tennis Union) and PZTS’s (Polish Table Tennis Federation) hopes of hosting the prestigious European Table Tennis Championships this year have been dashed with the tournament officially postponed.

Warsaw looked set to welcome the European continent’s finest players next month with the Championships scheduled to take place in the Polish capital from 15-20th September.

The sad news for table tennis fans across Europe comes following a recent surge in Covid-19 cases over the last few weeks, understandably resulting in extra pressure on the organising committees to put the safety of the athletes first.

Travel restrictions and mandatory quarantining have certainly played a part in the postponement; the tournament has effectively become impractical to hold due to all the new regulations that the Coronavirus has brought about.

Unable to go ahead in September, the news comes as a big blow for the ETTU and PZTS, especially after reaffirming their confidence of being able to hold the tournament in September just over a month ago.

ETTU President, Ronald Kramer, commented on the recent postponement of the Championships:

“The safety of players, coaches, officials, volunteers, staff and partners has been a priority for all organisations involved…

… In particular upcoming travel restrictions played an important role in the unanimous but sad Executive Board decision. With not all member Associations being able to participate, the event would not be a fair European Championships.” – Ronald Kramer

With a future date now to be confirmed at a later stage, the PZTS’s President, Dariusz Szumacher, admitted his disappointment at the decision to postpone but passed on his thanks to all who played their part behind the scenes:

“Due to Covid-19, we are hugely disappointed that the European Table Tennis Family will not be able to come to beautiful Warsaw in September. I would like to thank the ETTU and ITTF for all the support over these weeks and months. We had prepared a very special event despite the circumstances during the last five months. Nevertheless, my colleagues and I, the city of Warsaw and our partners look forward to welcoming everyone on another date for the European Championships.” – Dariusz Szumacher
