Japan’s Miyu Kato and Denmark’s Zhai Yujia have been awarded the Women’s and Men’s Singles gold medals at the 2019 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open in Guadalajara.

Named top seed for the Women’s Singles draw Miyu Kato’s campaign was surrounded by huge expectations, especially with the 2019 World Table Tennis Championships just around the corner and she didn’t disappoint Japanese fans.

Meeting another teenage star in Romanian qualification hero Adina Diaconu, 19-year-old Miyu Kato produced a fine display emerging victorious across six games (5-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6) to lift the trophy.

Miyu Kato now has two Women’s Singles titles to her name having won her first at the 2018 Slovenia Open in Otocec.

Over in the Men’s Singles event Zhai Yujia defied the odds with the No.26 seeded player defeating No.13 seed Qiu Dang, also by a 4-2 margin (11-8, 5-11, 7-11, 11-4, 13-11, 11-4).

Zhai Yujia becomes only the second-ever player from Denmark to win a Men’s Singles gold medal at international level with the country’s previous success coming courtesy of Michael Maze in 2004!
