The Saarland 1st Bundesliga team, 1. FC Saarbrücken, claimed its first-ever TTBL (Tischtennis Bundesliga) league title on Sunday 14th June after beating the fierce TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen 3-1 in the final.

Patrick Franziska and Shang Kun gave Saarbrücken a comfortable 2:0 head-start for the history-chasing club. Huge results in the context of the final, Franziska and Shang overcame Hugo Calderano (11-3, 6-11, 12-10, 9-11, 12-10) and Simon Gauzy (11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10) respectively.

Then the tide looked to have turned in the final when Jakub Dyjas stepped up to beat Dark Jorgic 3-1 (11-9, 12-10, 12-14, 11-3), giving Ochsenhausen a fighting chance to find a way back into the contest, although with very little margin for error.

In the end Dyjas’s efforts proved for naught as Chinese left-hander, Shang Kun, defeated Hugo Calderano in straight games (11-9, 11-6, 11-9) to seal the victory.

Following the conclusion of a long-hard fought campaign, Saarbrücken’s very own Patrick Franziska was pleased with the team’s performance:

“We have shown this unconditional will to win throughout the season, including today in the final.” – Patrick Franziska

The Managing Director of Tischtennis Bundesliga GmbH, Nico Stehle, offered his applause to the new Champions:

“Congratulations to Saarbrücken. They have offered an outstanding performance throughout the season and also today” – Nico Stehle

Stehle also went on to comment about the TTBL’S success with the media coverage of the final, as fans were able to the watch the final live for free on Eurosport and also on an online stream:

“We are proud to have determined the first German championship in Corona times before football and basketball, and we are delighted to have reached the millions with the Liebherr TTBL final.” – Nico Stehle.
