The 2018 World Championship of Ping Pong concluded on 28th January and once again the trophy ended up going to a Chinese competitor.

Competing at the event for the first time Wang Shibo enjoyed a wonderful debut at Alexandra Palace in London, producing a number of world class performances on his way to the title.

Fellow countryman Huang Jungang provided the opposition in the final and looked to be on his way to the top step of the podium, prevailing in two of the opening three games to gain the upper hand.

However, Wang Shibo refused to give up the fight and eventually came out on top in dramatic style, claiming victory with a sudden death point in the deciding game to lift the trophy (15-11, 13-15, 14-15, 15-13, 15-14).

“I am very happy and very excited to win the World Championship of Ping Pong. I am happy it was such a wonderful match for the audience, who were fantastic to play in front of. I feel like playing here is more exciting than playing even in China because the crowd really appreciate our efforts.” – Wang Shibo.

The top two places were reserved by China and the country also picked up a bronze medal through Xue Liang who exited at the semi-finals stage of the competition while the other bronze medal was awarded to Englishman Chris Doran following his excellent quarter-finals victory over two-times champion Andrew Baggaley.
