The first big story of the New Year has arrived with the news that the Nigerian women’s team will not be competing at the 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships.

Halmstad, Sweden is the destination for the event where the world’s strongest teams will battle it out for international glory but there will be no place at the tournament for Nigeria’s female stars.

This news comes after Nigeria failed to field a squad for the Women’s Team competition at the 2016 ITTF African Championships, an event which saw Olufunke Oshonaike lead the country to success in the Women’s Singles category.

Six African nations will be represented at the upcoming World Team Championships with Egypt, Algeria, Congo Brazzaville, South Africa, Morocco and Tunisia all qualifying for the tournament.

Despite the disappointing news for the Nigerian women’s team, the country will appear in the Men’s Team event alongside Egypt, Togo, Algeria, Congo Brazzaville, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia.
