“I have no support”: Quadri Aruna

Quadri Aruna is currently Africa’s second highest ranked table tennis player occupying 33rd position as of September 2017 and is the only African to have reached the quarter-finals stage of an Olympic table tennis event following his superb effort at Rio 2016.

However, the Nigerian competitor unfortunately has several problems holding him back from reaching his full potential and rather astonishingly Quadri Aruna is having to enter international events without the assistance of a national coach.

“I am actually getting used to playing without a coach because I have no sponsor”, stated Aruna. “Since I have no sponsor, I just have to play alone. I can say that a coach is very, very important but since I have no support, I just have to keep on playing alone.”

Competing at the recent 2017 Bulgarian Open, Aruna put in an impressive display to reach the semi-finals stage of the Men’s Singles competition.

Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov was the player who eventually eliminated Quadri Aruna from the tournament and the Nigerian feels proud of his efforts in Panagyurishte:

“I think I have been really lucky in this tournament… I have something really important happening here and I am very happy.”
