Xu Xin has won his first Men’s Singles gold medal on the 2017 ITTF World Tour, defeating Fan Zhendong in the Men’s Singles final at the 2017 Swedish Open in Stockholm.

The two players proved a successful partnership in the Men’s Doubles event with the Chinese duo claiming the trophy but Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong became rivals later in the day as they fought it out for the top step of the Men’s Singles podium.

Top seed Fan Zhendong was also looking for his first gold medal in the Men’s Singles category on the 2017 World Tour and made a strong start to the final with an opening game win.

However, Xu Xin responded well and four consecutive game victories saw the second seeded player lift the trophy (6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6, 11-2).

“Fan Zhendong was the favourite before the match started. We know each other so well; we know each other’s style of play. After I lost the first game it was important that I paid attention to the details, the short play; as the match progressed I became more active, more positive.” – Xu Xin
