The Women’s Singles competition featured a dramatic conclusion at the 2017 German Open in Magdeburg as Chen Meng recovered to defeat World No.1 and fellow Chinese competitor Zhu Yuling in the final on 12th November.

Zhu Yuling entered the tournament in Magdeburg off the back of a fantastic result at the 2017 Women’s World Cup in Markham, Canada and was the favourite to capture the title at the ITTF World Tour event in Germany.

With the opening two games of the final going in Zhu Yuling’s favour the top seed then had a great chance to move three games ahead leading 6-9 on points in the third end, but Chen Meng fought back bravely and managed to rescue the situation to cut the games score to 1-2.

Games four and five were won by Zhu and Chen respectively before the latter player emerged victorious in the sixth end to force a decider.

All of a sudden the momentum shifted strongly in Chen’s direction and powerful display in game seven from the second seed completed a fantastic comeback win (9-11, 8-11, 13-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-4).

“I’m very happy to be able to win the title at German Open… When I was trailing 1-3 , I did not give up and kept thinking of solutions on the court. I think now it’s normal to be 0-2 or 1-3 behind in matches. There were already two occasions this year where I lost the match when having a 3-1 initial lead… so I think I have learnt my lesson this time.” – Chen Meng

Chen Meng has now won three Women’s Singles gold medals at ITTF World Tour Platinum events in 2017 while Zhu Yuling remains without a Women’s Singles trophy on this year’s tour.
