Chen Meng has been crowned Women’s Singles champion at the 2017 Australian Open, after beating fellow Chinese competitor Wang Manyu in the final.

Taking place on Friday 7th July on the Gold Coast, the final turned out to be a dramatic conclusion to the tournament as both players put up a fierce challenge for the title.

Rather surprisingly it was the less experienced player Wang Manyu who made the brighter start to the title match, claiming two of the opening three games to gain a 1-2 lead.

However, Wang Manyu proved unable to finish off her third seeded opponent as Chen Meng picked up three consecutive game wins to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat (3-11, 12-10, 3-11, 12-10, 11-2, 11-7).

Chen Meng continues to impress having been one of the most consistent players of the year so far, and the 23-year-old is pleased to have triumphed Down Under.

“I’m very happy to get this win,” said Chen Meng following the conclusion of the tie. “I think it also important that both of us were able to present a spectacular game. Also, I think winning here could be turning point for me for my other matches.”
