There was a major shock in the Swiss city of Montreux on 4th February as Romania’s Bernadette Szőcs defied the odds to lift the Women’s Singles trophy at the 2018 Europe Top 16 Cup competition.

Bernadette Szőcs was making only her third appearance at the tournament with her previous best finish coming at the 2017 edition of the event held in Antibes where she finished in sixth position.

Starting the day with a powerful display against Sweden’s Matilda Ekholm in the semi-finals (11-7, 11-9, 11-9, 11-9) Szőcs then went on to face defending champion Li Jie of the Netherlands in the title match.

The Romanian star’s confidence was sky-high and a superb outing against Li (12-10, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7) saw Szőcs secure her place on the top step of the podium.

“I was not thinking that I play against the title holder. I was not afraid. My self-confidence is at the highest level. I played so many matches in the T2 against defenders… I can play against everyone now!” – Bernadette Szőcs

Both Szőcs and Li have now guaranteed their spots at the 2018 Women’s World Cup and will be joined at the tournament by another Romanian player Elizabeta Samara, who overcame Matilda Ekholm in the third-place play-off (11-4, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8).
